Please stop posting content or links to content created by artificial intelligence.

People will be given time to read this after which any content that seeks to strike up discussion about AI or like to generated articles will be deleted.

If you want to argue over this decision you will be banned from posting on this board.

This is a fly fishing discussion forum not a technology forum. Join a Tech forum and compete with other tech people there.

I do not know how to be more clear about this.

The irony of this post is that it’s a human generated AI style response.

We have all read or heard this quote.
“ Get off of my lawn”

Like AI this is not an original response but a human cultivated one quoted by a member here.

The issue IMO is that this is a perfectly reasonable response from frickerdog!

Drawing the line between AI and humans using only original thoughts and content would be impossible. 🤷🏻‍♂️

When this bubble began to inflate over a year ago a quip I read became a favorite. Before we spend a great deal of time trying to develop artificial intelligence shouldn't we attempt to solve natural stupidity?

The future promises a world filled with people who think they are smart because they have a smart phone. It is becoming increasingly difficult to meet people who actually are intelligent. Anyone can google.

In 2020 Google fired the head of of its AI ethics division for...

... doing her job.

Specifically, she wrote a paper (with other computer scientists) that was critical of the way large language models (like ChatGPT) were being developed. She argued that:

-Training these models uses huge amounts of resources (electricity and water).
-They are frequently inaccurate and biased because the data used to train them isn't screened.
-They create the illusion of meaning, but the tool producing the text doesn't actually understand the content it creates.
-They are perfect for creating fodder for fueling disinformation campaigns.

And here we are...

This isn't to say that some appllications of AI aren't extremely powerful. But the AI that is currently being used to produced web content is more analogous to a steam powered automobile than the Model T. It is pretty neat, but it isn't all that good at doing things that are important or difficult.

The problem with AI in its current form is that most people mis-use the tool. While it is great for looking through large amounts of data quickly thereby shortening your research time. It has become a tool for plagiarism. It repeats what it found from other peoples writing but frequently fails to provide credit to the source. To add insult to injury, people then repeat (cut and paste) what the tool provided but, don't credit the tool. Thereby they plagiarize the plagiarism tool. I think what Ard (and others) are saying is this forum wants original thought not plagiarized material. That is not backward or luddite thinking regardless of how you look at it.

Good call, @Ard

AI may well be a useful tool in some circumstances, but I see no value to it here.

I come here to have discussions (and disagreements) with people based on their experiences. AI brings no experience to the table. I think it is the equivalent of a new poster who would come here and contribute to an existing discussion by saying: "I know nothing about fly fishing and have never actually done any kind of fishing myself, but I googled the topic and here's what some random people on the internet (who might not be experts either) said..."

AI lost me for fly fishing when it gave me a long and confident (but completely fabricated) presentation based on Russ Peak as a mountain rather than a fly rod designer.

I don’t believe I saw the original post or posts that prompted @Ard to make this thread, so I may be missing some context. In months or years past, I have seen some AI accounts posting (to what end I do not know). If we are talking about that or similar behavior, I whole heartedly agree that adds nothing to forum. However a lot of online content now uses AI (even if it is edited by an actual person) and it isn’t always easy to spot. I hope some leniency is given to those that are inadvertently violating this new policy, because AI content is everywhere. Like for example, some fly fishing related articles that are shared might have the help of AI in writing some of the words and producing images, but that is rarely stated by the author.

The usage of AI by the former member was the least of his problems. He used ChatGBT to sound more educated on a subject than he actually was, was unable to distinguish the errors that it generated within the article, became irate when confronted by others of these inaccuracies and refused to change it, within 7 hours of this had published on both Youtube and his blog posts that the collective membership here (and forums as a whole) are no more than a collection of impudent asshole trolls and to warn folks to avoid this and any forum at all costs. All while huffing and puffing as he walked around the DFW area woods potentially with an open carry weapon strapped to himself.

So yeah, we don't need individuals like this here.

It's ok to use AI on your own and to reference it on subjects to check information....you're doing this already when you use "Google" or do searches....but use your own thoughts here please. This isn't a popularity contest, we don't care how smart you sound about fly fishing, we're not all right. Simply be yourself. I can assure you that Mods here will eliminate any behavior that is unsettling, improper and unfriendly to the forum collective.

I'm confused (my normal state) first we get a sternly worded message from "on high" that AI type posts will be deleted and if you don't like that you will be banned. THEN many discussions are posted discussing AI, some but not all, by the same people who are opposed to discussing AI because this is not a tech forum. Did I miss some addendum or secret code word or ??? It really doesn't matter to me if we/you discuss AI or whatever, I can ignore what I don't want to partake in. I'm just a little confused on the ground rules

I think it's pretty easy...

ai images which are funny/humorous (especially obvious ai images that are rather satirical), general discussion about ai since it's everywhere in our world, discussion about ai impacts on fishing or the forum, etc. = ok

ai generated content like posts, blogs, etc. = bad

ai generated content like posts, blogs, etc. and claiming they are your own, personally created, content = the worst

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just calling it like I see it :)

I believe the issue is that the poster tried to pass off AI information as his own. If you use a reference that involves AI, just state that. I think Flytie09 said it best when he mentioned searches via Google. Nothing wrong with it, just don't say you have personal knowledge and experience and "insider" information that supports your post, if you don't. I have to say, the members in this forum did a decent job identifying the statements as false and gave the guy every chance to back out if it.

This is what was so offensive yet again from this particular poster. And it wasn't the first, nor fourteenth time that "information" was put out as based in some level that was either just purposefully ignorant, fabricated, or Ai generated.

I had always thought maybe it was a lame attempt at comedy by putting out, and then linking here at times, information that was just so unbelievably, unethically, untrue, misleading and obliviously not their own work. If there was such a thing as "stolen valor" of the fly fishing world....... there was the poster child.

But the behaviors after the fact confirmed exactly the type of person and demonstrated the type of behaviors that would have continued.

As always Freedom of Speech comes with the potential for consequences......
we need more understanding of the concept of "consequences" today IMHO

Do you use ai for things you post? If not, then you have nothing to think or worry about regardless of anything else. 🤷‍♂️

IMO, if someone wants to use ai to generate posts then they belong somewhere more like facebook, instagram, etc. than here. This is a place for real people to discuss fly fishing primarily (and other random topics).

Apparently plagiarism is still popular with many people as they don't have much of an imagination and even less intelligence.

I don't see any long term improvement from using AI it will most likely just be high speed propaganda for the masses, and eventually as a weapon by the government.

I absolutely understand the intention here, Ard.
BUT
This is a forum that embeds cookies on our devices that utilise our data for ai- assisted ad-placement, amongst other ai things. Literally dozens of these cookies every time we log on on. On the UK FFF we even have an official AI bot called ForaFrank whose job is to revive dead threads to generate ad income for Vertical Scope. Surely some transparency is helpful I reckon?
AI content is here to stay and there will need to be constant discussion and revision of the rules and etiquette of all this.
Trying to exist as an AI free zone is hopeless but hopefully we can all work this out - a forum only exists because of it's members so we need to be kept on board.

Need to go to a more secure browser like DuckDuckGo.

It doesn't generate add traffic.
